Want to switch the chats or groups on Whatsapp to silent mode? Like Family groups where exiting the group is not likely recommended, class groups created to give students updates on classwork, but doesn’t involve much student interaction or any content sharing group etc.

So here comes the favorable feature ” Mute Notifications “. Enabling it gives chance to mute the chats for 8 hours, 1 week or 1 year. Also with or without getting notifications for messages from those groups.

Instead of enabling Mute Notifications again by following that method at end of chosen period like 8 hours or 1 week or 1 year, here’s a work around.

For group chats :

Step 1 : Open the group you want to mute permanently.

Step 2 : Tap More options icon at top-right corner.

Step 3 : Select “Group info”.

Step 4 : Select Custom Notifications.

Step 5 : Check the box next to use custom notifications.

Tap on Notification tone > Select None > Tap OK.

Next, Tap on Vibrate > Select None. Tap on Popup Notification > Select No popup.

For individual chats :

Here the steps are same as those done for groups, but with small changes.

Step 1 : Open the chat you want to mute permanently.

Step 2 : Tap More options icon at top-right corner.

Step 3 : Select “View contact”.

Step 4 : Select “Custom Notifications”.

Step 5 : Check the box next to “Use custom notifications”.

Tap on Notification tone > Select None > Tap OK.

Tap on Vibrate > Select None. Tap on Popup Notification > Select No popup.

Additionally, you can set your preferences for calls from that chat contact too.

That’s it. Now your selected group and/or chat is kind of muted permanently.

Note : You’ll get silent notifications for messages from those groups and chats. Silent notifications can be prioritized by checking or unchecking “Use high priority notifications”.

We cannot restrict the app from sending notification for message arrival implicitly. (Explicitly from your system settings you can allow/disallow notifications from app if you wish. But it impacts all messages not just confined to selected groups/chats.)

Whatsapp is working on permanent mute notification feature to replace it with mute for 1 year option and testing it in it’s beta versions. As per beta program users few feature leaks also include Advance search with filters like Photos, Videos, Links, GIFs, Audio and Documents and Linked devices to use same Whatsapp account on upto 4 devices.

But for sure, these features are still under development and in some cases cannot be promised for stable roll-out too. All we can do is continue using this reliable, user-friendly messaging app and lookout for what the next updates in app include.
